ENHYPEN Pay Homage to ’90s Boy Bands in ‘Blessed-Cursed’ Video: Watch

The single comes from the K-pop group's second album, 'DIMENSION: ANSWER.'

ENHYPEN has returned with a bang. The K-pop group officially released their new album, DIMENSION: ANSWER, on Monday (Jan. 10), and with it, a larger-than-life video for the album’s lead single, “Blessed-Cursed.”

The stylish video kicks off grainy footage of the group watching a New Year’s Eve countdown on the last day of 1999 before entering the year 2000. The K-pop idols all raise their wine glasses as they enter the new year, before a guitar riff starts the energetic track. Like the dance-routine heavy music videos for boy bands in the ’90s and early 2000s, ENHYPEN switch between colorful rooms, expertly coordinated moves and outfits inspired by the futuristic fashions of the time throughout the visual.

DIMENSION: ANSWER is the follow up to ENHYPEN’s debut album, DIMENSION: DILEMMA. The album, released on Oct. 12, 2021, debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 chart. The group spoke with Billboard about the release and revealed that the “dimension” concept is an expansion of their sound after debuting as a group.

“Since our debut, we have been expressing our experiences as artists and honest emotions through our music. ENHYPEN’s authentic story of growth is the biggest inspiration for our music. Continuing from the ‘BORDER’ series, ‘DIMENSION: DILEMMA’ is an extension of our story,” member Jungwon explained. “We realize that our post-debut world is even more complex and multidimensional than we expected, and find ourselves in a dilemma while facing a variety of desires between being an artist, as well as an individual. However, this album contains our determination to move forward to find the answers.”

There comes a time in life when you start to develop your own beliefs, moral code and ethos for living – even if you don’t realise that it’s happening at the time. Some of the ideals that society had previously imposed on you become notions to spurn and turn your back on, igniting a fire full of questions and existential exploration. Here, you begin to forge your own path and it’s at this point we find ENHYPEN on ‘Dimension : Answer’, the extended repackage of their first full-length album ‘Dimension : Dilemma’.

As ‘Dilemma’ ended, the septet seemed to be caught in something of a crisis. “So, what is it I want? / Is this correct? / What should I do? What choice do I make? / Who am I? And what do I mean when I say ‘me’?” Jake mused on the breakbeat-infused ‘Interlude: Question’, voice thick with uncertainty. Despite its title, ‘Answer’ doesn’t claim to have any of the solutions, but it does offer some insight on how the band will move forward in their search for them from here on out.

“I just go my own way,” they assert on their new title track ‘Blessed-Cursed’, another enticing single that mixes crunching, fiery guitar riffs with the thundering thud of hip-hop bass. Independence – be it in their thinking or their attitude – becomes key to ENHYPEN’s seven members, who are boldly breaking off from the pack to find their identities outside of the constraints of the world’s rules and restrictions. “And I’ll walk like a lion, I’m making my own history,” they sing with headstrong confidence on the chorus, rejecting the “boundaries holding me in”.

If the single is assured and fierce, then ‘Outro: Day 2’ moves into a more contemplative state. Its stuttering, space-y synths slow the blood-pumping pace like the chaos of day melting into the quiet of night, eking out more space for reflection. Like ‘Dilemma’’s ‘Interlude: Question’, that stretch gets filled up with queries, Jake pondering: “How must I live tomorrow? Where must I begin? / Waking up early? Out of bed by 6am?” This time, though, he has a conclusion. “Maybe this won’t amount to much, but I won’t let someone else write for me,” he declares. “This is the real beginning of a world of my own.”

Sandwiched in between the two is the candy-coloured R&B-tinged pop of ’Polaroid Love’, a little breather from the big questions about the biggest topic of all, life. In it, the group find magic in something as ordinary as polaroid photos, comparing them to love – something everyday and commonplace but still capable of adding an iridescent sparkle to your waking hours. “It’s like a polaroid love / Love, that old-fashioned feeling / But my heart is racing,” Jake and Ni-ki sing on the chorus.

Throughout their records so far, ENHYPEN have consistently opened up their experiences and considered them with depth and nuance. While they might be navigating their new world as idols, their stories are easily transferable to your own life, common ground found in the humanity and generational anxieties embedded in their lyrics. On ‘Answer’, they continue to build on that bond, not so much signposting the way through such struggles but offering to try and navigate through the tangle together.

South Korea’s 36th annual Golden Disc Awards ceremony took place on January 8, where artists are awarded based on a combination of panelist votes and sales data.

This year’s Golden Disc Awards, which nominated releases between November 2020 and November 2021 were dominated by K-pop mainstays such as BTS and IU, along with rookie girl group aespa.

The solo artist won Digital Song of the Year with her hit single ‘Celebrity’, while BTS was awarded Album of the Year for their November 2020 studio album ‘Be’, making them the winners of the only two Daesang (grand prize) awards of the night.

Additionally, aespa took home a Digital Song Bonsang (major prize) with their breakout single ‘Next Level’, along with Artist of the Year, the Cosmopolitan Artist Award and Rookie Artist of the Year.

This is the latest in a string of achievements by the three acts, who had swept most of the grand prizes during recent awards ceremonies such as the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) and Melon Music Awards (MMA).

For those unversed, when a new K-Pop artist receives the 'Rookie of the Year' (or something similar) award at all five major music award shows in South Korea - the Melon Music Awards (MMA), the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), the Golden Disk Awards (GDA), the Gaon Chart Music Awards, and the Seoul Music Awards (SMA) they are given the title of achieving a 'Rookie Grand Slam'. This is very rare, and in fact, had only happened to five groups before this year.

The term was first coined back in 2008 when SHINee became the first K-Pop group to accomplish this feat. Next was iKON that was next to achieve this incredible feat in 2015. After iKON, it was another two years before Wanna One became the next artist to earn the title of 'Rookie Grand Slam', after their debut in 2017. It was another two years until not just one, but two more artists were added to this shortlist: ITZY and TXT, who both managed to accomplish this achievement in 2019. ITZY also became the first girl group to do it!

Now, of course, aespa becomes the sixth group overall and the second girl group to earn the 'Rookie Grand Slam' title. This also means that SM Entertainment is the only company to have multiple groups accomplish this! Congratulations to aespa!

BTS’s ‘Butter’ Was The Only Song To Sell One Million Copies In America In 2021

BTS scored the bestselling song of 2021 in America, and now that all the numbers have been tabulated and made public, it’s clear that nobody else stood a chance when it came to competing with the South Korean pop band. In fact, the biggest hit of the past year outpaced every other title by a massive margin, even other smashes by the same septet.

“Butter” by BTS has been named the bestselling song of 2021 in the U.S., and it wasn’t even close. According to MRC Data’s annual year-end report, the catchy cut sold a whopping 1.889 million copies throughout the year. It’s incredibly rare for any title to come even close to that sum these days, so it’s not entirely shocking that “Butter” wrapped 2021 as the only single to hit one million pure purchases.

As if that wasn’t enough of an accomplishment for BTS, “Butter” was also the only song to sell half a million copies. The No. 2 bestseller of 2021, Walker Hayes’ “Fancy Like,” missed reaching that mark by just 1,000 copies. “Butter” outsold the runner-up smash more than three and a half times over, easily outpacing the country track.

2021 marks the second year in a row that BTS has landed the only million-seller in America. The same band’s “Dynamite” ended 2020 as the only track to hit that important sales sum. Now, the seven-member vocal outfit has demonstrated once again that they can truly sell like nobody else in the business.

“Butter” debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 in early June, and it ended up ruling the all-encompassing ranking of the most-consumed tunes in the U.S. for 10 nonconsecutive frames. The single performed well on streaming platforms and eventually at radio, but it was fans buying it in enormous numbers that played the biggest role in sending it right to the peak position on the tally.

BTS’s bestseller ruled over Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart for a record-tying 18 weeks, though not all in a row. “Butter” is now on the same level as “Dynamite” for the most frames atop the purchase-only list, with both tunes hitting that 18-week mark in 2021. The cut started at No. 1 on the tally with an eye-popping 242,800 copies. It went on to sell at least 100,00 copies in eight different weeks, and it was one of just three tracks to sell at least that many units in one frame. The other two were also by BTS, as their solo smash “Permission to Dance” and their Coldplay collaboration “My Universe” were massive sellers upon their arrivals as well.

On January 7, Gaon officially released its yearly album, digital, download, and streaming charts for 2021.

As the yearly charts are based on accumulated weekly data since the beginning of January 2021, albums and songs released earlier in the year have more weekly scores included in their results.

BTS topped the album chart for 2021, with 2,999,407 copies recorded for their single album “Butter.”

NCT swept three out of the next four spots on the chart: NCT 127’s “Sticker” came in at No. 2 for the year with 2,427,559 copies, followed by NCT DREAM’s “Hot Sauce” at No. 3 with 2,097,185 copies.

SEVENTEEN’s “Attacca” took No. 4 with 2,059,073 copies, and NCT’s “Universe” rounded out the top five with 1,630,715 copies.
