I could NOT believe the pain. My left palm, left arm, shoulder and part of my back was raw, bleeding and full of the road. I was air-evacuated by helicopter to the local hospital. After evaluating me, they filled me full of demerol (which I didn't mind that much, heh heh.) After x-rays and the determination that there were no broken bones, the staff then escorted me to a room with a bath-tub of sorts and told me to strip and get in after it was filled with warm water.
The real pain began at that point because they handed Standard SMS Surgical gown me a plastic brush and told me to scrub out the gravel (there was a lot of it!) and a nurse scrubbed my back where I couldn't reach. It was HORRID!
I now have lighter-colored skin that never tans up like the rest of me in the places that were sanded off by the road. Other bikers recognize it when they see it. A lot of us have that badge now.
