Diaz will be taking part in his first contest at Lightweight, having outgrown Super Featherweight, where he reigned as IBF champion. He defeated Tevin Farmer to win the belt, but was then held to a draw in his last outing and first defence by Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov, which prompted the move in weight.
Ramirez will want to exploit the long layoff of his opponent, and also put himself in the frame for a world title shot, and a stoppage win will certainly help.
“This Friday, we are going to put on a great show. I know Sullivan Barrera very well and he knows me. We know that each of us always comes well prepared and ready to put on a show. But at the end of the day, I’ll be the one to come out with my hands raised in victory. I’m going to come out with a record of 42 wins and 28 knockouts.”
“The road to this fight has been exciting. I am happy to be working with Golden Boy Promotions. I am grateful for the opportunity. I want to give a great performance and show all my skills. I’m going to give the fans what they want: good fights!”
“I’m also very excited to be fighting here at Banc of California Stadium. I can’t wait to see all the people here, who are finally back to these kinds of events. There will be a lot of Mexicans and Latinos coming here to support me, so I can’t wait to give them a great show.”
Fortuna is unbeaten since he lost a split decision to Robert Easter Jr. in 2018 and one of the leading lightweights. The winner will be in prime position for a shot at a 135-pound title.
Ramirez continues to chase Floyd Mayweather’s 50-0 record and a title shot at light heavyweight against a solid veteran from Cuba. The former 168-pound titleholder will be fighting at 175 pounds for the third time, having stopped Tommy Karpency in April 2019 and Alfonso Lopez this past December.
The Mexican’s most-recent fight of this magnitude might’ve been his majority-decision victory over Jesse Hart in December 2018, which was the final defense of his super middleweight title.
‘Zurdo’ is huge at any weight he fights at, and I fancy him to halt Barrera in the second half of the contest.
As if the WBC Lightweight title picture wasn’t clouded enough, Joseph ‘Jo Jo’ Diaz (31-1-1, KO15) and Javier Fortuna (36-2-1, KO25) meet in a clash for the interim belt on the undercard here.
Ramirez is ranked in the Top 5 in two of the four major sanctioning bodies. Barrera, 39, is a longtime contender with some notable victories, including a decision over Joe Smith Jr. in 2017. However, he has lost most of his biggest fights. He’s 1-2 in his last three outings, a 12th-round knockout in a fight he was losing badly to Dmitry Bivol in 2018 and unanimous decision to Hart in June 2019.
Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (41-0, 27 KOs) and Sullivan Barrera (22-3, 14 KOs) hosted their final press conference today at Banc of California Stadium, home of their July 9 fight which will be streamed live on DAZN. They were joined by several members of the undercard, including Joseph Diaz Jr. (31-1-1, 15 KOs) and Seniesa Estrada (20-0, 8 KOs).
