While Bruce Lee is counted as a student of the great wing chun grandmaster, Ip Man, the fact is that much of his hands-on instruction in wing chun was done by Wong Shun Leung -- one of Ip Man's senior students, a noted fighter in his own right. Wong had been given permission to teach on his own, and the teenaged Lee was part of a small group of students who would meet at Wong's home for instruction back in the day.
One week, Wong noted with consternation that Bruce was consistently the only student showing up for class. As this continued, Wong did a little digging, seeking out his other students to see what was going on. Here's what he found:
Bruce Lee had been consistently intercepting the other students between the bus stop and Wong's home before each class. Pretending to have just come from Wong's home, he would greet any fellow students who had decided to train that day, and tell him, "Sifu Wong had [some emergency] he has to take care of right away. Class is canceled!" Lee would then magnanimously offer to walk his classmates to the bus stop and ensure that they got on the bus (in Chinese culture, this is considered good manners and thus not suspicious at all). Then, just as class was scheduled to begin, Lee would show up, "fortuitously" receiving a private lesson from Wong.
Lee's next "private" lesson from Wong was full contact. And painful.
